Strachan & Fischer’s Big Gay Slip’N Slide

One of the canards of the anti-LGBT industry is the tired argument that accepting LGBT equality will lead us down the slippery slope of moral corruption. Capitulate when it comes to gay marriage and just around the corner we’ll be facing, in words from the film Ghostbusters, “a disaster of biblical proportions … real wrath of God type stuff … Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Review: Reoriented by Tyler J. Francke

Tyler Francke’s new novel “Reoriented” tackles the most divisive issue facing modern Christianity: homosexuality. Through the fictional story of a gay student at a Christian college, Francke offers an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of “faith, scripture and sexual identity.”

NALT and Scotsmen

Unfortunately (but not surprisingly), The NALT Christians Project has come under fire from a variety of sides: atheists suspect we’re trying to convert them, fundamentalists think we’re wolves’ in sheep’s clothing trying to legitimize sin and sundry others declare that we’re continuing white male oppression by speaking at them rather than giving them a voice. It’s tempting to try and rebut all these claims, but instead I’m going to focus on one particular critique that was voiced on Twitter:

When you say “we’re not ALL like that”, this is a subtle (if unintentional) use of the No True Scotsman fallacy

The No True Scotsman fallacy is an informal logical fallacy that entails a shift of associations to arbitrarily exclude an individual from the group being discussed. For example, in the case of Christians and LGBT rights you’d be committing this fallacy if you made this argument: (more…)

The NALT Christians Project
Today is the public launch of The NALT Christians Project. Modeled after Dan Savage’s It Gets Better Project, NALT Christians offers public proclamations that Christians are Not All Like That: that many, many of us believe in full LGBT equality.

I’m proud to be a part of this project, both as a web designer/developer and as a creator of a NALT video. It’s my hope that this project will serve as loud message to those who view Christianity as inherently anti-gay and that it will further the progress that is already being made on this issue.

If you agree with the message of NALT Christians, there are a few ways you can help out:
1. Make a NALT video (I made one, and if I did anyone can!)
2. Share the notalllikethat.org website on the social media service of your choice.
3. Blog about it — let the world know what you think about the project and about Christianity’s relationship with LGBT rights.
And if you don’t agree with what we’re doing, then please do number 2 and 3 anyway, because any publicity is good publicity!

Review: God’s Gay Agenda by Sandra Turnbull

God’s Gay Agenda by Sandra Turnbull is well-written, thoughtful and hopeful examination of, in the words of the subtitle, “Gays and Lesbians in the Bible, Church and Marriage.” Turnbull’s passion for not only full inclusion of LGBT individuals in the church, but also her view of the crucial role they have to play within the Body of Christ is admirable. Her enthusiasm for the mission of the Church shines through on every page and her deep love of God, her awareness of the Holy Spirit’s work in her life and her respect for the Bible are something the church could use much more of. Turnbull’s optimism for further advancements in God’s kingdom is contagious.
